How throw ratio works
Throw ratio is just distance divided by image width. A 0.5:1 projector sitting 2m from the screen fills 4m of width. The same projector at 1m fills 2m. That single number decides whether a projector can work in your room at all — everything else is secondary.
Ultra-short throw
Around 0.2:1 to 0.3:1Sits almost against the screen. Common in home cinema, but we do not use it for golf simulator builds — it is very fussy about being perfectly square, and the position puts it close to the action. Listed here so you can recognise it.
Short throw
Around 0.4:1 to 0.9:1The usual choice for golf. Ceiling-mounted in front of the golfer, close enough that your body never blocks the beam. This is where most sim projectors sit.
Standard throw
Around 1.2:1 and aboveNeeds real distance, which usually means mounting behind the golfer — and that is exactly where your head and shoulders cast a shadow on the screen at address.
How bright does it need to be?
Impact screen fabric is not a proper projection surface — it is woven, so it scatters light and eats brightness. That is why a projector that looks fine on a wall can look washed out on a sim screen.

What throw ratio do I need for a golf simulator?
Divide the distance you can mount at by your screen width. A 3.6m screen with 2.5m of throw distance needs roughly 0.7:1. Most golf simulators land between 0.4:1 and 0.9:1, which is why short-throw projectors dominate the category — you need a big image from a short distance, mounted in front of the golfer.
Why do people say to avoid standard-throw projectors for golf?
Not because the picture is worse — because of where they have to go. A standard-throw projector needs enough distance that it usually ends up behind or above the golfer, and at address your head and shoulders block part of the beam. You get a shadow across the screen exactly where you are looking. Short throw and ultra-short throw put the projector in front of you, so the problem never arises.
How many lumens do I need?
At least 3,000 ANSI lumens, and more if your room has ambient light. Impact screen fabric is woven rather than a smooth projection surface, so it scatters more light than a standard screen and needs more brightness to look crisp. Watch out for projectors quoted in “LED lumens” or “light source lumens” — those numbers are not comparable to ANSI and are usually far more flattering.
Do I need a 4K projector?
It is nice, not essential. At normal viewing distance in a sim bay, brightness and throw ratio make a far bigger difference to how good the image looks than resolution does. A bright Full HD projector at the right throw ratio beats a dim 4K one mounted in the wrong place. If the budget stretches to 4K without compromising brightness, take it.
Where exactly should I mount it?
Ceiling-mounted, in front of where you stand, at the throw distance the calculator gives you, and centred on the screen. Get it square — the further off-centre or off-square it sits, the more keystone correction you need, and keystone correction throws away image quality. Run the cable through the ceiling rather than leaving it dangling; a fibre optic HDMI cable will handle longer runs without signal loss.
Will the projector get hit by a golf ball?
It can happen, which is another argument for short throw or ultra-short throw. A projector mounted in front of the golfer and tight to the ceiling is out of the firing line for anything except a seriously mis-hit shot. If you are worried, a protective housing or a recessed ceiling mount is cheap next to the cost of the projector.
Can I use my existing home cinema projector?
Check two things: its throw ratio and its brightness. Most home cinema projectors are standard throw, around 1.2:1 to 2:1, which means mounting well back and living with shadows. They are also often tuned for dark-room film watching at lower brightness than a sim screen wants. It costs nothing to run the numbers above before you buy anything new.
What about input lag?
Less critical than for gaming, but still worth checking. Simulator software renders the shot after impact, so you are watching a replay rather than reacting in real time. Anything under about 50ms feels immediate. Most modern laser projectors are comfortably inside that.
