Golf simulator room size, dimensions and space requirements
How much space do you need for a golf simulator?
As a working minimum for a full swing with a driver: about 3 m wide, 4 m deep and 2.6 m of headroom over the tee, with the ball 2.4 m from the screen. A comfortable DIY golf simulator room is 4 m wide by 5.5 m deep by 2.7 m high, which is roughly a double garage. The planner checks your own room dimensions against these numbers and tells you where it is tight.
What ceiling height do you need?
Measure the height over the tee, not at the wall. 2.6 m suits almost everyone with a driver, 2.4 m works for most people with shorter clubs. Ceiling-mounted launch monitors such as the Protee VX and Uneekor EYE XO want 2.75 m or more at the mount, which the planner checks for you, including pitched garden-room roofs.
Can you build a golf simulator in a garage?
Yes, a single garage is usually the tight case and a double garage is ideal. The two things that catch people out are ceiling height under a flat garage roof and depth once a screen, its 300 mm gap and the swing area are allowed for. Put your garage measurements in above and the planner shows the largest screen, which launch monitors fit and where the projector goes.
What does a DIY golf simulator build cost?
It depends on the launch monitor more than anything else. A floor, screen and wall package with a Square Golf launch monitor and a short-throw projector starts around five to six thousand pounds; a Protee VX or Uneekor build with a 4K laser projector is nearer fifteen thousand. The planner prices your exact room from our shop as you choose, so you can see the total move with every decision.
How the planner works

The screen opening is the room width by the ceiling height at the screen face, less your flooring. The screen sits 300mm off the wall on a 40mm frame, because an impact screen needs space behind it to absorb the ball, so on a pitched roof we measure the height at that point rather than at the wall.
What if my ceiling slopes?
Give us the eaves and ridge heights and tell us which way the ridge runs. If it runs side to side, the screen sits on the long wall under the eaves and the roof rises towards the tee. If it runs front to back, the screen wall is a gable: the screen is limited by the eaves at each side, but the headroom over the tee is the full ridge height.
Is the size shown what I order?
For the Foresight kit, yes, order at the opening size. For a custom-cut eyelet screen the finished screen is smaller so the bungees can tension it: 75mm off each side and the top, 10mm off the bottom. The planner does that sum for you.
How much room do I need to swing?
2.6m of headroom over the tee suits almost everyone with a driver, 2.4m works for most people, and below that you will be limited to shorter clubs. Allow at least 2.4m from the ball to the screen and around 1.2m behind you.
How are quantities worked out?
Turf and foam underlay come on a 4m wide roll, so we take your room depth in whole metres and add a second run if the room is wider than 4m. Interlocking underlay mats are 1m squares. Wall pads are counted from the area they cover plus 10% for cuts. LED strip runs up the front edge of the pads on both sides and across the ceiling to join them, then is rounded up to the kit lengths. Touchscreens are only offered where the side wall beyond the pads is long enough. Launch monitors are checked too: ceiling units against your ceiling height at the mount, radar units against the space behind the ball. Projectors are checked against your room: the mount has to be on the ceiling behind the golfer, and from there the throw ratio has to fill the screen width. Throw ratios come from the manufacturers’ spec sheets.
