The thing most people get wrong

Search for simulator room sizes and you will be told you need 3m of ceiling, 4.5m of width and 6m of depth. Plenty of people read that, look at their garage, and give up. They should not.

Those are ideal numbers. The real constraint is which launch monitor you choose, because the three tracking technologies have completely different space needs. Get that right and a surprisingly small room works.

Ground camera

No room-length requirement

Sits beside the ball and photographs it at impact. Because it reads the strike rather than the flight, it does not care how long your room is. This is what rescues most small rooms.

Overhead camera

Needs 9ft / 2.74m of ceiling

Mounted above the hitting area, out of your swing path and out of the firing line. Reads both right and left handers without moving anything. Trades ceiling height for floor space.

Radar

Needs roughly 5m of depth

Sits behind you and tracks the ball through the air, so it needs to see real flight before the screen. Superb outdoors and at the range. Indoors it is the one that demands a long room.

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

Around 2.7m (8ft 8in) is enough for most golfers to swing a driver comfortably; 3m (10ft) is the comfortable ideal. Below 2.7m it gets restrictive, though plenty of people still build and simply accept a shorter backswing or leave the driver out. The honest test costs nothing: stand where you would hit and make a full swing with a driver or an alignment stick. That tells you more than any number.

My room is too short. Can I still build a simulator?

Almost certainly, yes — you just cannot use a radar launch monitor. Radar units sit behind you and need to watch the ball fly, so indoors they want around 5m of depth. Camera-based units read the ball at impact instead and have no room-length requirement at all. This is the single most useful thing to know when planning a small space.

How wide does the room need to be?

Around 3m is the practical minimum and 4.5m is comfortable. Width matters more than people expect, because it is not just your swing arc — it is the screen, side padding, and enough room that a slight mishit does not find the wall. If you are right-handed only you can shift the hitting position off-centre and make a narrow room work better.

Do both right and left handers need extra space?

Extra width, yes, because you need a hitting position for each side rather than one off-centre spot. It also affects the sensor: overhead units read both stances without being moved, whereas some ground-based units sit to one side of the ball and need repositioning when you swap. If both handednesses will use the room regularly, an overhead unit saves a lot of faff.

How much space do I need behind the screen?

Allow 30–40cm between the screen and the wall. The fabric absorbs the shot by moving backwards, so mounted tight to a wall it will be loud, it will fire balls back at you, and both screen and wall will suffer. Remember to take that off your usable room depth when planning.

Is a garage or a garden room better?

Garages usually win on space and cost, but need attention on three things people forget: insulation, ventilation and light control. A purpose-built garden room lets you specify the ceiling height from the start, which removes the single most common constraint. If you are still deciding, plan the ceiling height first and work back from there.

What else should I budget space for?

The bay is not just you and the screen. Allow for the hitting mat and a stance area, the projector mount, side and ceiling padding for mishits, a spot for the PC or laptop, and somewhere to stand or sit that is not in the swing path. It is worth sketching the plan view before committing, because these add up quickly in a tight room.
