Free Golf Handicap Calculator UK
A simple golf handicap calculator for UK golfers. Work out your WHS Handicap Index from as few as 3 rounds, then convert it to a Course Handicap, Playing Handicap and Stableford points — the same World Handicap System formulas used by England Golf and the R&A.
How It Works
For each round enter your adjusted gross score (max net double bogey per hole), plus the course rating and slope rating from the tee you played (shown on the scorecard). Your index is the average of your best score differentials under WHS rules.
| # | Adjusted Gross Score | Course Rating | Slope Rating | Differential |
|---|
The Formula
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par). Course rating, slope and par for each set of tees are printed on the scorecard or displayed at the club.
The Formula
Playing Handicap = Course Handicap × format allowance. In England the standard allowance for individual stroke play and Stableford competitions is 95%.
How Points Work
Strokes are allocated by stroke index from your playing handicap. Net par = 2 points, net birdie = 3, net eagle = 4, net bogey = 1. Leave a hole blank if you picked up (0 points). Edit par and stroke index to match your course.
| Hole | Par | Stroke Index | Strokes Recv’d | Gross Score | Points |
|---|
What Handicap Am I If I Shoot 90, 100 or 110?
Don’t have your course ratings to hand? Get a quick estimate from your typical score. On a standard-difficulty course (par 72, slope rating 113) your Handicap Index works out roughly 2 strokes better than your average score over par, because WHS only counts your best rounds.
| You Typically Shoot | Estimated Handicap |
|---|---|
| 80 | 6 – 8 |
| 85 | 11 – 13 |
| 90 | 16 – 18 |
| 95 | 21 – 23 |
| 100 | 26 – 28 |
| 105 | 31 – 33 |
| 110 | 36 – 38 |
Rough guide only, assuming a par-72 course of standard difficulty. For your real number, use the full Handicap Index calculator above with your actual course and slope ratings.
How Golf Handicaps Work Under the World Handicap System
Since 2020, golfers in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have used the World Handicap System (WHS). Your Handicap Index is a measure of your demonstrated ability, calculated from the best 8 of your last 20 score differentials. Each differential adjusts your score for how hard the course played, using the course rating and slope rating of the tees you played.
What’s the difference between Handicap Index, Course Handicap and Playing Handicap?
- Handicap Index — your portable number, e.g. 18.4. It follows you to any course in the world.
- Course Handicap — your index converted for the specific course and tees you’re playing, using the slope rating.
- Playing Handicap — your course handicap after the competition allowance (95% in most individual UK stroke play events).
How many scores do I need for a handicap?
You need just 3 × 18-hole scores (or the equivalent in 9-hole rounds) to get an initial Handicap Index. The fewer scores on your record, the more conservative the calculation — our calculator applies the official WHS adjustment table automatically.
What is the maximum golf handicap?
The maximum Handicap Index under WHS is 54.0 for both men and women.
Can I get a handicap from 9-hole rounds?
Yes. Under WHS 2024, a 9-hole score is converted to an 18-hole score differential using your expected score for the back nine, so 9-hole rounds count towards your record straight away. Two 9-hole rounds no longer need to be manually combined.
What is a good golf handicap in the UK?
The average male Handicap Index in England is around 16–18, and around 27–29 for women. Single figures (9.9 or better) puts you roughly in the top 25% of club golfers, and a scratch handicap (0.0) in the top 1%.
Can I use simulator rounds for my handicap?
England Golf permits scores from approved simulator setups in some circumstances, and platforms like GSPro and E6 Connect are increasingly used for competitive indoor leagues with their own handicap systems. A launch monitor at home is the fastest way to log meaningful practice rounds year-round.
Cut Your Handicap Faster With Real Shot Data
Golfers who practise with a launch monitor know exactly why they’re losing strokes — carry distances, dispersion, spin and gapping. These are the three we recommend most, all tested in our own simulators:
